The Second Largest Diamond Ever Found

lucara-diamond

Canadian-based Lucara Diamond Corporation have announced the finding of the second-largest diamond in history.

This tennis ball-sized white diamond weighs in at a jaw-dropping 1,111 carats!   The stone, described as gem-quality with a type IIa grade, was found in the company’s Karowe Mine in Botswana on Monday.

The stone ranks only behind the Cullinan Diamond in terms of carat size.   When the Cullinan Diamond was recovered in 1905, it weighed in at an astronomic 3,106 carats.   The diamond was later cut into 9 major stones and another 96 smaller stones.

Lucara followed up that news with an announcement on the finding of two other hefty white diamonds.   The first, weighing in at 813 carats, is considered to be the sixth largest diamond ever recovered.   The other stone found weighed in at 374 carats.

“I am truly at a loss for words. This has been an amazing week for Lucara with the recovery of the second largest and also the sixth largest gem quality diamonds ever mined. We are truly blessed by this amazing asset.”

-William Lamb, president and CEO of Lucara

Colour Diamonds Shone Brightly This Week

Two colour diamonds broke records at auction this week and the aftershocks are going to be felt around the industry.

The first record-setting diamond from this week was a 16.08-carat Fancy Vivid pink diamond that went under the hammer at Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale on Tuesday, November 10.

The cushion-shaped stone, now called “The Sweet Josephine” is one of only three Vivid pink diamonds weighing over 10 carats ever to go to auction.   The final sale price did not disappoint as the diamond sold for more than $28.5 million, an auction record for a Vivid pink diamond.

Blue-Moon

The jaw-dropping numbers continued on Wednesday, November 11, as a 12.03-carat Fancy Vivid blue diamond set a world record for any gemstone sold at auction in history as well as the largest per-carat price for a gem in history.

The Blue Moon Diamond, now called “The Blue Moon of Josephine”, was part of the Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels auction  in Geneva.

Numerous sources have confirmed that the buyer of both diamonds was Hong Kong real estate developer Joseph Lau.   The billionaire is listed by Forbes Magazine as the 114th richest person in the world.   He named both diamonds after his 7-year old daughter Josephine.
