Colour Diamonds Shone Brightly This Week

Two colour diamonds broke records at auction this week and the aftershocks are going to be felt around the industry.

The first record-setting diamond from this week was a 16.08-carat Fancy Vivid pink diamond that went under the hammer at Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale on Tuesday, November 10.

The cushion-shaped stone, now called “The Sweet Josephine” is one of only three Vivid pink diamonds weighing over 10 carats ever to go to auction.   The final sale price did not disappoint as the diamond sold for more than $28.5 million, an auction record for a Vivid pink diamond.

Blue-Moon

The jaw-dropping numbers continued on Wednesday, November 11, as a 12.03-carat Fancy Vivid blue diamond set a world record for any gemstone sold at auction in history as well as the largest per-carat price for a gem in history.

The Blue Moon Diamond, now called “The Blue Moon of Josephine”, was part of the Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels auction  in Geneva.

Numerous sources have confirmed that the buyer of both diamonds was Hong Kong real estate developer Joseph Lau.   The billionaire is listed by Forbes Magazine as the 114th richest person in the world.   He named both diamonds after his 7-year old daughter Josephine.

The previous record for a gemstone sold at auction was held by the 24.78-carat Graff Pink diamond, which sold for $46.2 million in 2010.

A Possible Record-Breaking Diamond Headlines Upcoming Auction

Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels auction is set for Tuesday, November 10 and the headliner is a stamp-sized pink diamond that could set a new record.   Here’s a look at that and four other stunners set to go under the hammer on that day.

1.  An Important Coloured Diamond Ring

an_important_coloured_diamond_ring_d5945868h

We wrote extensively about this stone in September.   It is a 16.08-carat Fancy Vivid pink diamond, the largest Fancy Vivid Pink ever sold at auction.  The pre-auction estimate for the diamond has been set for between $23 and $28 million (USD).   If it ends up selling for more than $33,768,000, it will break the record for the highest per-carat price for a pink diamond in history.

2.  An Important Coloured Diamond Pendant

an_important_coloured_diamond_pendant_d5945806h

A massive 91.81-carat Fancy Vivid yellow cushion-shaped diamond features a pavé-set diamond loop at the top and is mounted in gold.   The pendant is expected to sell for between $3.9 and $4.9 million, an estimate that might be a little low considering the size of the stone.

3.  An Important Coloured Diamond Ring

an_important_coloured_diamond_ring_d5945850h

The centerpiece of this ring is a 21.52-carat Fancy brown-pink pear brilliant-cut diamond and includes baguette-cut diamond shoulders.   The estimates for this ring have been set at between $1.5 and $1.9 million.

4.  A Rare Coloured Diamond Ring

a_rare_coloured_diamond_ring_d5945853h

The only blue diamond on our list, this is a Fancy dark bluish gray cushion-shaped diamond weighing in at 25.00 carats.   Driven by the rarity of the stone’s colour, the pre-auction estimate has been set for between $1.2 and $1.5 million.

5.  A Coloured Diamond and Diamond Ring

The final item on our list, a 9.28 carat Fancy Vivid yellow oval brilliant-cut diamond flanked by triangular-cut white diamond shoulders.

A Possible Record-Breaking Diamond

blue-diamond.jpg.size.xxlarge.letterboxA

A 12.03-carat Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Blue diamond could become a record-breaking stone come this November as it goes to auction by Sotheby’s.

The “Blue Moon Diamond”, named for its once-in-a-blue-moon kind of rarity is expected to sell for between $35 and $55 million at their Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels auction in Geneva.

The original stone was recovered by Petra Diamonds at the Cullinan mine in South Africa in January 2014.

blue rough

In it’s original state, it weighed in at 29.62-carats and was quickly sold for $25.6 million to Cora International.   The New York-based firm then spent the next 6 months cutting and polishing the fabulous blue stone to its current form.

If the Blue Moon Diamond does end up selling for more than $32.6 million, it will break the record currently held by the 9.75-carat Zoe Diamond as the most expensive blue diamond ever sold.  If it sells for more than $46.2 million, it will set the record for the most expensive diamond of any kind sold at auction.
