Color Diamonds Light Up Christmas For Christie’s

The final major jewelry auction of 2015 is ready to go on December 10 by Christie’s in New York and some stunning color diamonds are set to go under the hammer.

1.  A Coloured Diamond and Diamond Ring

A massive 30.48-carat Fancy Vivid yellow diamond headlines this stunning ring and is flanked by tapered, baguette-cut white diamonds.   Pre-auction estimates for the ring have been set for between $1.4 and $1.8 million (USD).

2.  A Coloured Diamond and Diamond Ring

The diamond only weighs in at 3.74 carats but it is a stunning Fancy Vivid purplish pink set with  tapered baguette-cut white diamond on either side.   The piece is expected to sell for between $1.3 and $1.5 million.

3.  A Diamond and Coloured Diamond Pendant Necklace

The only necklace on our list, the piece features an 18.88-carat modified heart-shaped white diamond, with a circular-cut pink diamond and white diamond surround, as well as a pear and circular-cut diamond surmount to the fine link chain, enhanced by two circular-cut diamonds.   This fantastically intricate piece is expected to sell for between $1.25 and $1.75 million.

4.  A Coloured Diamond and Diamond Ring

The star of this piece is a pear brilliant-cut fancy gray-blue diamond, weighing in at 19.97 carats, trimmed with circular-cut diamonds and set within an undulating tapered baguette-cut diamond surround.   This final ring on our list has a pre-auction estimate of between $1 and $1.5 million.

5.  A Pair of Coloured Diamond and Diamond Ear Pendants

The high-end estimate for this piece is $1 million, not surprising considering the earrings feature a Fancy yellow pear brilliant and a pear modified brilliant-cut yellow diamond, weighing 15.10 and 14.86 carats respectively.

Colour Diamonds Shone Brightly This Week

Two colour diamonds broke records at auction this week and the aftershocks are going to be felt around the industry.

The first record-setting diamond from this week was a 16.08-carat Fancy Vivid pink diamond that went under the hammer at Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale on Tuesday, November 10.

The cushion-shaped stone, now called “The Sweet Josephine” is one of only three Vivid pink diamonds weighing over 10 carats ever to go to auction.   The final sale price did not disappoint as the diamond sold for more than $28.5 million, an auction record for a Vivid pink diamond.

The jaw-dropping numbers continued on Wednesday, November 11, as a 12.03-carat Fancy Vivid blue diamond set a world record for any gemstone sold at auction in history as well as the largest per-carat price for a gem in history.

The Blue Moon Diamond, now called “The Blue Moon of Josephine”, was part of the Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels auction  in Geneva.

Numerous sources have confirmed that the buyer of both diamonds was Hong Kong real estate developer Joseph Lau.   The billionaire is listed by Forbes Magazine as the 114th richest person in the world.   He named both diamonds after his 7-year old daughter Josephine.

The previous record for a gemstone sold at auction was held by the 24.78-carat Graff Pink diamond, which sold for $46.2 million in 2010.

A Possible Record-Breaking Diamond Headlines Upcoming Auction

Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels auction is set for Tuesday, November 10 and the headliner is a stamp-sized pink diamond that could set a new record.   Here’s a look at that and four other stunners set to go under the hammer on that day.

1.  An Important Coloured Diamond Ring

We wrote extensively about this stone in September.   It is a 16.08-carat Fancy Vivid pink diamond, the largest Fancy Vivid Pink ever sold at auction.  The pre-auction estimate for the diamond has been set for between $23 and $28 million (USD).   If it ends up selling for more than $33,768,000, it will break the record for the highest per-carat price for a pink diamond in history.

2.  An Important Coloured Diamond Pendant

A massive 91.81-carat Fancy Vivid yellow cushion-shaped diamond features a pavé-set diamond loop at the top and is mounted in gold.   The pendant is expected to sell for between $3.9 and $4.9 million, an estimate that might be a little low considering the size of the stone.

3.  An Important Coloured Diamond Ring

The centerpiece of this ring is a 21.52-carat Fancy brown-pink pear brilliant-cut diamond and includes baguette-cut diamond shoulders.   The estimates for this ring have been set at between $1.5 and $1.9 million.

4.  A Rare Coloured Diamond Ring

The only blue diamond on our list, this is a Fancy dark bluish gray cushion-shaped diamond weighing in at 25.00 carats.   Driven by the rarity of the stone’s colour, the pre-auction estimate has been set for between $1.2 and $1.5 million.

5.  A Coloured Diamond and Diamond Ring

The final item on our list, a 9.28 carat Fancy Vivid yellow oval brilliant-cut diamond flanked by triangular-cut white diamond shoulders.

A 75-Carat Yellow Diamond Set To Shine This Month

A massive, stunning yellow diamond ring will be headlining Christie’s Important Jewels auction coming up on October 20.

The cushion modified brilliant-cut Fancy Vivid yellow diamond, weighs in at 75.56 carats and is expected to sell for between $3 and $4 million.   That amount breaks down to between $40,000 and $53,000 per carat.

The current record for yellow diamonds is held by the 100.09-carat Graff Vivid Yellow which sold last year for $16.3 million or $162,853 per carat.

Other diamonds set to go under the hammer at the October 20 sale include a 34.12-carat cushion-cut Fancy Yellow diamond mounted on platinum and a diamond pendant featuring a 36.23-carat Fancy Brownish Yellow diamond.

A “Stamp Sized” Pink Diamond Could Set A Record

The largest diamond of its kind is set to go to auction later this year and the sales price could be as high as $28 million.

The 16.08-carat diamond will be the highlight of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva coming up on November 10.

The Fancy Vivid Pink diamond is described as “stamp-sized” and is the largest Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ever sold at auction.

“The fancy vivid pink grading means the hue is of the purest and strongest saturation,” said Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s head of jewelry.

“The color is even and shows no trace of a secondary color that may include purple, orange brown or grey in pink diamonds of a lower grade.”

The pre-auction estimate for the diamond has been set for between $23 and $28 million (USD).   The current per-carat record price for a pink diamond is $2.1 million.   To break that record, this diamond would need to sell for at least $33,768,000.   Considering that amount is only $5 million above the high-end estimate, it is possible that this record could fall.
